A Call For Muslims To Go Plant-based

Eating meat is very traditional for many Muslims but when the circumstances change around us brothers and sisters we have a responsibility to ourselves, our families, and our world to be at the forefront of change. If we have better options available to us why do we as Muslims and stewards of the Earth continue to consume foods that harm our health, the planet, and animals? How many of us will say more prayer for health this Ramadan? How many of us will say more prayer for those in poverty suffering from hunger and thirst? How many of us will even spare a thought for the animals being exploited and denied their rights on behalf of our demand for more meat?
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said “Whoever of you sees an evil must then change it with his hand. If he is not able to do so, then [he must change it ] with his tongue. And if he is not able to do so, then [he must change it] with his heart. And that is the slightest [effect of] faith.” (Recorded in Muslim)
Islam discourages us from eating or drinking anything in excess because there is always a harm in overconsumption. Today, we are consuming animal products in staggering amounts and that lifestyle is not without consequence. Raising animals for food requires massive amounts of land, food, energy, and water and causes unmerciful animal suffering. Science has shown that eating meat leads to many ailments in the body including major killers such as heart disease, stroke, obesity, and cancer. In Ramadan, we reflect more on those that suffer from poverty, hunger, and water scarcity. Then we continue to make no changes in ourselves or communities. We continue to have a high demand for meat and dairy. With our money and choices, we support an industry that is a direct causational factor of these life and death issues plaguing so many people around the world.
Times have changed brothers and sisters the meat we eat is killing us, causing social unrest and poverty, denying animals their rights, and destroying the planet. It's time to act with your hands. Make the choice that you and your family will not be apart of the problem but the answer. Choose to eat less meat or go plant-based.
If you can't leave eating meat all together try to reduce it until you have it only on Fridays and the two Eids.
